Volunteer Eye-opener
I'm writing concerning the Feb. 26 article, "Councilman apologizes for comments."

The comment by the city councilman regarding the haves and have-nots is very disturbing to me. My Palm Desert High School English class is reading "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. The book concerns the very issue of haves and have-nots.

As part of my class project, my Dad and I volunteered the past two weekends at Martha's Village and the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission. At the mission, I saw a group of women and children waiting for food turned away with, "No mas, no mas" when the food ran out. This happened just 10 miles from the $80 million Indian Wells golf course remodel. This situation seems eerily similar to "The Grapes of Wrath."

I have lived my whole life in the city of Indian Wells and am proud of the city's many good deeds, but this issue is troubling. I want to thank my AP English teacher, Mrs. Butero, for opening my eyes to the other side of paradise.

I urge all people of the Coachella Valley to help those who are less fortunate. Have-nots does not mean criminals.

Piranhas compete in Junior Olympics
Twenty-two Coachella Valley swimmers from the Palm Springs Piranhas returned from the Junior Olympics this month, including 9-year-old Meagan Ronci.
The fourth-grader at Palm Desert's Washington Charter School competed in six swimming events at the games, held at the Mission Viejo Aquatic Center the first week of August, and set personal bests in all of them.
“This was my second Junior Olympics. When I was 8, I qualified in a few events, but this year I qualified in all the events — all 10,” Ronci said. “It's fun. It makes you excited to go there after all my hard work and effort.”
Ever the socialite, Ronci's favorite aspects of competing, both in the Olympics and with the Piranhas, is the mingling.
“I get to meet different people from different teams in the Junior Olympics,” she said. “And I've been on the Piranhas for two years, and I've met a lot of friends there.”
The Piranhas are a local swimming club team whose most famous member is Palm Springs High junior Lynette Lim, who is in Beijing competing for the Singapore national team.
Ronci gives credit to the coaching staff of the local club team.
“The best part of the Piranhas is the coaches. They're cool, and they help me a lot with my strokes and my times,” Ronci said. “And they encourage me to go fast.” 10/17/08

Her parents were also at the spectators' deck to give her their support.
An enthusiastic spectator who was cheering on for Lim expressed that he was "very proud that she is the very first Singaporean swimmer who won a Gold medal (in the AYG)."
Coach Dwight Hernandez said: "She was in a really great shape. I could see that she had a lot of fun and I'm really proud of her".

INDIRA CERANIC SELECTED FOR NORTH AMERICA CHALLENGE CUP
Palm Desert High School’s sophomore Indira Ceranic was named to the North America Challenge Cup Team for an international age group competition. The NACC will be held August 5-7, 2010 at the Santa Clara International Swim Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Ceranic will compete in this annual meet against Canada and Mexico. Ceranic, age 15, is a member of the Piranha Swim Team and is one of ten 15-16 year old girls selected from Southern California Swimming to compete in this meet.
“It’s an honor to compete at an international meet,” said Coach Tim Hill of the Piranhas. “Indira has worked hard this year and has the fastest times in her age group in Southern California for both the 50 free and 200 free.”
Selection was based on individuals’ long course times from February through July 4, 2010. The fastest swimmers in Southern California with no more than two Junior National times are eligible to compete.
